European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
