The Himalayan nation's Political Landscape Sees Major Alliance Formed By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The September uprising was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the New Political Partnership

According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Political Discussions Underway

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of leading political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
